Curved Cabinetry

The main doorway to the kitchen was directly adjacent to the first run of cabinets. Thinking that this would be a sticking point for in the flow of the kitchen, SouleWork suggested that we make that first cabinet into a curved cabinet in order to eliminate the sticking point in a pleasing way.

We achieved this by using a technique known as bent lamination. The first step is to create a very accurate bending form. We then cut the maple lumber into thin, 1/8", stripes before laminating them back together over the form. The final thickness of the doors and face frame was 7/8", which is consistent with the rest of the cabinetry. We used this technique for the face frame and for all the door parts in order to ensure accuracy and durability.

Hand Turned Island Legs

A big concern of the client's was that the kitchen's design be consistent with the rest of the house. We wanted a consistent feel and flow from room to room. In order to achieve this, we designed and made the kitchen island legs to match existing turnings in other areas of the house. We laminated large, 5" x 5" x 36" billets of maple and then mounted them onto our industrial lathe where we turned them by hand.

3" Thick Butcher Block

Made in house, this 3" thick butcher block made from hard maple was a beautiful hub of the kitchen. Being 3" thick, it will last for many years and many sendings. It was finished with an oil-wax blend that is both food safe and easily refreshed.
